Specialscape: Disability Topography

The Specialscape disability data is based on the data from the Census Bureau that documents the extent of persons of disability throughout the United States.  While not available at all levels of geography, data from 7 categories of disability may be mapped and reported upon at the Census Tract layer and above.  Those with Tier 1 or 2 access have access to basic summary data at the larger layers of geography.  Those with Tier 3 subscriptions may map and generate reports at the Census Tract layer in addition to higher levels of geography. 

ANY DISABILITY

Total number of disabled persons as defined by the Census Bureau

SENSORY DISABILITY

A sensory disability includes blindness, deafness, or a severe vision or hearing impairment.

PHYSICAL DISABILITY

A physical disability includes conditions that substantially limits one or more basic physical activities such as walking, climbing stairs, reaching, lifting, or carrying.

MENTAL DISABILITY

A mental disability includes conditions where a person has difficulty learning, remembering, or concentrating.

SELF-CARE DISABILITY

A self-care disability includes conditions where a person has difficulty dressing, bathing, or getting around inside the home due to a sensory, physical, or mental disability.

GO-OUTSIDE-THE-HOME DISABILITY

A go-outside-the-home disability includes conditions where a person has difficulty going outside the home alone to shop or visit a doctor's office due to a sensory, physical, or mental disability.

EMPLOYMENT DISABILITY

An employment disability includes conditions where a person has difficulty working at a job or business due to a sensory, physical, or mental disability.
